“Shorty” is a name I gained early in school, which is saying a lot. Even when everyone was short, I was short! Among other nicknames I acquired throughout my school years (little one, little foot, short stuff) this one was the most common. It was so common, I got used to answering to this name. In fact my birth name is non-traditional and most people don’t pronounce it correctly, so for a while being called shorty was welcomed.
I was, however quite self conscious about being short and, well I really am not sure why. I am not just 5′ short, I am 4′ 8″ and over the years many people have taken the liberty of informing me that in the eyes of the law, I am a midget. I don’t actually have the characteristics of a midget though. When I obtained my medical records, I found that when I was 3 or 4 the doctors considered that I may have something called Tim’s disease. However I did continue growing even if I did stay in the lowest percentile.
The truth of the matter is I was born prematurely and there were some complications at birth. In addition to being extra small (3 pounds at birth) I also gained a birth defect. I was born with my right leg 1 inch shorter than my left. As a result I am left handed. I have always favored my left side and have been self conscious of the limp that I have as a result in the past. However, now I really embrace everything about me that makes me unique. Being short may have it’s disadvantages (I can be seen climbing shelves at the grocery store). I am also just grateful that I do have the ability to walk, even if it is with a limp.
Now as an adult and a mother of an adult I look back and realize the name Shorty really is a term of endearment. My son and I were often mistaken as siblings when he was growing up. He needless didn’t appreciate this very much! My point is that is why I decided to call my website Shorty’s Hippie Haven. I think it does a good job describing who and what I am. I am a Short woman (I also learned as an adult that shorty just refers to women) I am a proud hippie! I also have returned to a haven in my hometown which I am so happy to be able to share with others. I also want my website to be a haven for all that come here. A place of love, understanding and belonging. A place to commune with nature and share natural remedies and ways of life. A place to revel in uniqueness in all of its forms!
