7 Garden tools I always keep on hand

Every gardener needs an arsenal to get the job done!  Here is a quick summary of garden tools I use pretty much every day (except the tiller).

  1. Spade This thin pointy hand shovel  is perfect for digging deep into the soil to create holes for planting or to unearth a plant

2.  Hoe – this flat tool is great for moving the dirt you have tilled and shaping the dirt.

3. Shovel – any planting requires digging!  Make sure you pick a shovel with a comfortable handle, and something that is not too heavy

4. Hand tiller  This looks like a hand held mini rake, with less prongs.  The hand tiller has 3 large claws to help you break up the soil.

Here is our tiller, the garden was tilled 3 times before we started planting. The rows are far enough apart that we can till in between them.

5. Gloves I recommend wearing gloves to protect your hands, it also keeps them clean!

6. Kneeling pad  These are really useful if you are going to be on the ground for a while tilling or planting or weeding.

7. Edger – An edger makes it very easy to remove large chunks of growth from the topsoil.

Sun Safety:

Garden hat  Keeping your head covered is so important when you are out in the sun even if it is not shining bright and hot.

Sunscreen  Make sure you protect your skin!  It’s your largest organ and prolonged exposure can lead to skin cancer!  I have extremely fair skin. I do not tan,I turn lobster red and then acquire a large collection of freckles which is a sign of skin damage.
